What is a HEPA Filter?
HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. These filters are designed to capture tiny particles from the air, including dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and bacteria. A HEPA filter works by forcing air through a dense mesh of fibers that trap particles as they pass through.
HEPA filters are incredibly efficient—they can capture up to 99.97% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger. This makes them ideal for people with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory sensitivities. They're also commonly used in hospitals, laboratories, and clean rooms where air purity is critical.
What is an Activated Carbon Filter?
Activated carbon filters work through a process called adsorption, which is different from the mechanical filtration used by HEPA filters. Activated carbon is a highly porous material that has been treated to increase its surface area. When air passes through, gases, odors, and chemical vapors stick to the surface of the carbon.
These filters are excellent at removing odors, smoke, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other gaseous pollutants. However, they're not effective at capturing solid particles like dust or pollen. Activated carbon filters typically need to be replaced more frequently than HEPA filters, as they become saturated over time.
